If it helps, I just did a bunch of research and ended up ordering a AGM Rattler V2 25-256. Under a grand, and had excellent reviews in its latest form. I could have spent more, but this seemed to fit my needs at the price point.

Don’t get anything with a resolution less than 384. I have 2-AGM Adders, a Rix Storm 3 and an AGM Sidewinder hand held. All are 35-384. Used every weekend except during deer season and both hold up well. The Adder is just over $2k and the Rix just under. Thermal Optics Plus is where I have bought all my thermals

Dark Night Outdoors is good to go. The owner spent over an hour on the phone with me talking optics. Upgrade/consignment opportunities as well.

In that price range the rix LEAP series is great. I got mine from midwest thermal optics. They're a great family owned and operated store in Illinois. Shipping was fast and insured. They run some specials fairly regularly. AGM and pulsar are good brands in that price range also. Avoid ATN. Southern precision outdoors is another supplier I've heard good things about and located in Louisville, GA.
