We have a building permit, and a grading permit. The location for the building currently has a good sized tree.

Cutting the tree down and pouring a concrete slab over the stump doesn’t seem like a good idea.

Any suggestions? It doesn’t seem logical to bring in heavy equipment for one tree.

You are going to need someone with a stump removal tool/machine. These large grinders do a complete job of getting rid of stump, roots and all under the ground surface to a degree that nothing remains that is of any degree.
Most any competent tree removal companies have such a machine or access to one.

In my opinion cut it down, remove the stump. Going to have to fill in the void, if you just grind the stump, the mulch is way to soft to pour concrete in and take the chance of the rest of the stump rotting and therefore cracked or sinking concrete later.

Hey fatcat, resist the urge to cut the tree down to ground level before you have someone come look at it. Most of the time the stump and root ball are much easier to remove if you leave as much trunk sticking up as possible. This gives a machine operator something to grab, push, and pull to remove the rootball. Ideally, if space permits a good operator can dig around the tree and push it over, using the trees weight to bring it down.

Lees tree service. Best in the business IMO.
