What's a good caliber for Bison?

Friend of mine got to go one of those hunts a few years ago. He had a custom Ruger #1 in 405 Winchester. He said the problem wasn't shooting one, it was how mean they were when one of the herd was down. They would not leave the downed animal.

As in all big game hunting, shot placement is key to success. A have a friend that recently shot a huge bison with a .300 WBY. One 180 gr through the heart. They are shaggy animals which gives them a deceptive shape. Study pictures to determine lung & heart location from various angles.

Here is a link to some tips on hunting bison.

I am going to apply.

Probably use my .577 Snider for at least one. If the 577 will take down a cape buffalo, then I don't see why it wouldn't take down a bison
.30 cal (or larger) with 165gr minimum bullet is specified. Also lead-free (copper) bullets required.
You might want to think about optics...they also mentioned that shots would be out to 300 yds...and beyond if necessary. Gotta put 3 out 5 shots in a 4” circle at 100 yds using whatever field rest you will hunt with.
Maybe take a backup rifle in 7mmSTW or .300WM with a 3-18x VX6HD.
