  1. Ham Radio People Metro ATL

I have checked in to the Wednesday evening night crawler net on the Rome repeater a few times. Sounds like a good group.
  2. Ham Radio People Metro ATL

I use a diamond MR77 on my truck. It’s a dual band mag mount & it performs surprisingly well. I would highly recommend that antenna. A buddy has good results with the same antenna on top of a filing cabinet in his office. As with all radio/antenna combinations there will be variables, but you...
  3. Ham Radio People Metro ATL

Yeah - I would let HRO do it then. Unless you are really confident with a soldering iron.
  4. Ham Radio People Metro ATL

Google the modification to your HT. Most of the time it is an easy code to enter after holding down a certain key while powering on. It‘s normally referred to as an “unlock” code. I did my Yaesu HT in about 30 seconds. I know I’m sounding like a broken record but the $25 Baofengs are already...
  5. Ham Radio People Metro ATL

It’s not common to call CQ on a vhf/uhf repeater. Just give your call sign or say “this is (call sign) monitoring”.
  6. Ham Radio People Metro ATL

I might be interested in some of the equipment that @18wheeler and @Ringleader mentioned. Send me a list. If I don’t want it some one in my local club might. There’s always a new guy looking for something.
  7. Ham Radio People Metro ATL

Wow. Congrats! Let us know how it works.
  8. Ham Radio People Metro ATL

Unless there is a mountain between you & the repeater you should be able to hit it from 5 miles away easily with a 5 watt HT. Amazon has Baofeng UV5R’s for around $25. It would be a fairly cheap experiment.
  9. Icom 7300 or Yaesu 991a

    Good luck finding either.
  10. Icom 7300 or Yaesu 991a

If you are only gonna have one rig, the Yaesu is the clear choice. It will transit on every Ham frequency. The icom is a great radio but you don’t have VHF/UHF.
  11. Ham Radio People Metro ATL

No idea. I saw some mention of it in another thread. My HT’s are capable of monitoring those frequencies so in a SHTF scenario it may be useful to reach a group of non ham operators.
  12. Ham Radio People Metro ATL

I’ve thought about it but so many people know my current 2x3 call sign I am hesitant to change. Are you going to get a vanity call sign?
  13. Ham Radio People Metro ATL

Pretty active Ham club in Newnan - google is your friend.
  14. Ham Radio People Metro ATL

    Sounds like what became SouthernLinc.
  15. Ham Radio People Metro ATL

^^All good info there. I have a 10 & 20 meter 1/2 wave dipole suspended between 2 trees. Use black 12 ga. wire and black paracord and it is almost invisible. RG8X feed line is also fairly small and difficult to see. A home brew Slim Jim 2 meter antenna in the same tree works well also for local...
  16. Ham Radio People Metro ATL

I buy my ham gear from gigaparts.com or Amazon. Amazon for the Chinese stuff like Baofeng or QYT. I have a QYT dual band mobile in my truck with a Diamond mag mount antenna that I gave $105 for on Amazon. Kenwood, Yaesu & iCom are all good quality. Yaesu tends to have more of a “shack in a...
  17. Ham Radio People Metro ATL

I’ve not had much luck with NVIS. Our club has a monthly 10 meter net. I can talk with a couple of stations within a few miles of me, but never been able to communicate with net control which is about 12 miles away. I can’t hear them, they can’t hear me. I’ve tried my 10 meter half wave dipole...
  18. Ham Radio People Metro ATL

None of that is “wrong”. Amateur radio has endless possibilities, some depend on the grid, some do not. Most VHF repeaters are not grid dependent. Backup generators for them are common. Hams using backup power is also normal. That’s part of it - being able to communicate during a SHTF scenario -...
  19. Ham Radio People Metro ATL

This stuff will be tough to sell as individual parts. I would list it on Ebay as a lot. The website QRZ.com has a swap meet page where radios & related equipment are posted for sell. That may work as well. Are there any radios or other equipment for sale?
  20. Ham Radio People Metro ATL

Congratulations on passing the test. The 4 - 6 week wait for your call sign is excruciating. A $25 Baofeng from Amazon will get you started. Amazon also has decent beginner mobile/base radios from QYT for around $85.
