Look on YouTube for a guy name Jim Panky. I think he's from GA and has 10 videos on learning how to play. He's pretty funny and I like his style of teaching.
If you get the Scruggs book, be sure it has the CD. It's on YouTube also if the book don't have it.
What brand picks are they? The Nationals were skinny and never could get used to the. I got some Dunlops because they were wider. Lots more comfortable to me.
I aint for Academy these days but one of these works great. They are only about an inch thick but really help out on the long sit times. Since they are thin you they don't change your center of gravity.

Either one of the 2 you mentioned will be a good quality made boat. 10 or a 12 will be a good river sized boat also.
