Which rimfire caliber do you prefer for a bolt action varmint rifle and why? For non-game use only (ground hogs up to coyotes).
The ammo is the same price now so that's not a factor.
If it's hogs and bears that you're loading for, go with 230 gr FMJ for penetration. That's the important factor on large animals. Hollow points may expand before they reach the vitals and not stop the threat.
Thanks for all the good info and advice. We just got back from two weeks in the mountains. Met one guy who had seen a bear the day before but we didn't see any even though we hiked every day. I carried a lightweight 1911 .45 and it conceals well but I may get a .44 mag snubbie one of these days.
Thanks for sharing that experience and the opinions of the spray. A lot of people recommend it but I have my doubts. Any animal that smells as bad as a bear does probably won't care if you spray him with a skunk. I'll carry a handgun and hope I don't need it.
Thanks to those of you with a serious answer to a serious question. My EDC is a .38 snubbie but I like a .357 or bigger revolver when in the woods. I was hoping someone might have some actual experience with bears and handguns.
Anybody with experience hunting bear with a handgun? What would you carry concealed while hiking in north GA black bear country with your family? I need to conceal it under summer clothes because we hike in areas where we see gun-phobic yuppies.
