    Go buy a plug non-fouler for $7 or so. Drill to correct size and install in the bung then the O2 sensor. Keeps it out of the stream enough to pass. Then you can gut the converter if you had to.

    I think you’ve got it under control, I too have found the same with GM gears that USUALLY you can use the original shim or at least it’s a good starting point. Seems a bit tight to have the pinion that close to the housing but I’m not a Ford guy and I’ve never messed with an 8.8 so I couldn’t say.

    Correct, which makes this job easy. No reshimming of the pinion for depth. Essentially remove the axles, remove ring and place on new carrier and reinstall. I would strip it all down and do new bearings & seals which it sounds like you’re doing but that’s a $300 job if you’re supplying the parts.
