My son's first rifle was a Rossi youth single shot. 15+ years later, we still use it for plinking and critter control. It's a great rifle for a small person, and handles easily for full size people as well. I'm perfectly content with it as a woods or range companion.
If you're reloading your own: Something like a Berry's 124gr plated HP or flat point at about 1000fps. Basically a lead slug with a decent amount of frontal force, good for penetration, which, when shooting down toward animals on the ground, works well.
