Decibel level is pretty close with all of them.
Only about ten decibels of difference and they range from 160 with a 40, 159 with a 12 gauge and 170 with a 7.5" ar. Hearing damage happens with anything over 85. Anything over 120 causes immediate damage.

I was responding to a person who was saying they didn't have a healthy enough body to handle recoil. I use a .45 super with 135 grain solid copper extreme defender running 1700 fps. in a pistol for home defense and an ar or a 12 gauge full of buckshot if I have to get up out of bed.
The brain is not really a small target. It's about 6 inches across and doesn't vary much with angle. A nose is a small target and most people here can hit one at 100 yards more often than not being around 2 inches +/-.

That is a very real concern. If I'm going to cripple myself by shooting a .38 special, I would be switching to a 5.7 if I could afford it and a .17 hmr or 22 mag if I couldn't. Get a .22 mag with similar controls to practice with. 20 rounds of 5.7 in a ruger pistol with no recoil is no slouch...
