Brannen has done some barrel threading for me, fitted barrels, and a repair to a Browning BDM. Nothing major, but his attention to detail is phenomenal.
I'd be wary of resorting directly to dies or thread chasers, especially if the threading was originally good.
One technique I have used was to get valve lapping compound onto the threads and just run the can on and off the thread a few times and then clean the whole thing up. Repeat a few times.
You do need to be a bit cautious depending on what the fill is on.
For example, a color fill into the roll marks of a CZ with a Polycoat finish is a bit of a problem because the Polycoat finish itself is not very robust and is attacked by some solvents. But if you're actually "on metal", a...
Schools don't run 'practical' courses any longer (back in the UK, when I was in 'the machine' - shop included setting up lathes, milling machines and for punishment, being given a piece of scrap steel and being told to turn it into a 1/2in cube) - so you ended up exposed to complicated manual...
Yeah, I guess so, but c'mon. It's not like you're storming the machine gun nests on Pointe du Hoc.
First gun I decided to completely strip was a Beretta Vertec 92FS, because I needed the frame cerakoted. I know - easy gun, but still. My daughter asked if I could teach her, and then she put...
I thought so too until I started putting the parts I wanted to clean in a ball jar with the cleaner, and then have the jar in the ultrasonic tank, filled with water. Cheaper. Less Mess. You can even consider saving the cleaner for later use.
There are a couple of cases where I'll pay someone to do a complete strip and clean of a gun, because a man's gotta know his limitations.
One of these would be my Browning BDM, which has some very nasty, fiddly bits in the action.
The other one would be if I (for some bizarre reason) wanted...
Brannen Moss is in Jasper. He's done a fair amount of work on a number of my guns. I'm very satisfied with the results.
