I started out in the 80’s with a 243 and my uncle’s hand loaded 95 gr nosler partition pt and never had a deer run off. I eventually got a 25-06 for open fields and put up my 30-30 and now use a 7mm-08 in the woods/brush, I got my wife on one too and she loves it. I was taught and I taught her as well to take neck shots, it’s either laying right there or a complete miss. We live in the country so plenty of practice in the backyard makes for a more comfortable/confident shot.

Gail Root who designed the Ballistic Tip Bullet for Nosler was an avid Elk Hunter. He hunted with a .243 and the 95gr Ballistic Tip bullet. So I don’t know if “those with more experience” you refer to are the same dumbasses that tell everyone you have to have some minimum amount of energy to kill this or that when it is internal soft tissue damage that kills. Again how many foot pounds does an arrow have when it hits? Not much. But it still destroys enough soft tissue to kill the animal. How is that so? You’re not dumb. Think about it. All of that foot lbs required information is grade A bull****.

Sure, under 200 yards it should be "acceptable"

No one is saying it can't kill a elk beyond that, it's just not a good idea with far better options.

I can be dumb at times, but never dumb enough to compare a 95gr piece of lead and copper to a 500gr arrow with blades designed specifically for carving through flesh like it's apples to apples.

Lol. If you grab them and slit their throats they'll eventually die too.
You can also kill them with your truck.
A .243 for elk is unnecessarily underpowered. To argue otherwise, is just to argue.
I knew a man once who only hunted deer with a 223. He had a shoulder injury that severely limited the amount of recoil he could handle. He was incredibly selective with his shots and an above average marksman. Given that he had far above average success.
So yes there are circumstances where a 243 for elk is better than poking them in the eye with a stick. But again why limit yourself when there are an infinite number of more capable alternatives?

I'll go ahead and tell it, I hunted in deep woods in Baker Co. with a Contender Carbine, Super 16 barrel in .223. My limit in that area was 50-60 yards, never missed the head shot. Always stayed in the limits with no problems. Getting the deer out was the hard part. However, I shot a lot of armadillos after deer season with that carbine, it was lots of fun.
