1871-1971 NRA Centennial 357 Magnum SAA

A few minutes well spent with acetone and a rotating nylon 12g brush....gets the gold out and the Advertising for the NRA fades into what one might call a five footer......looks fantastic from 5 feet. Someone mentioned that these are great because they don't look like commemoratives....I agree, especially with the gold out of the lettering. I can live with the NRA markings, a reminder not to trust thieving lobby groups.

Cut is done by hand with a hacksaw....making sure never to jump the groove and mark up the barrel aft of the cut.....weight of the saw doing all the work. Then, piloted hand turned facing cutter to square up. A hand turned 11 degree crown cutter to make a nice clean recess. File the sharp outer edge over round by hand and still a bit of hand polishing to go but you get the idea.

Easiest way to level the dovetail jig on a round barrel is upsidedown, on the top strap on a nice smooth surface.....clamp lightly and snug the jig into place....

Afterwards, clamp it upright by the jig and check for level....I use top of jig and floor of action....top of action is round enough its difficult to get a bubble to rest and give a true reading.

Hog it out with angled and vertical cuts of a fine tooth hacksaw....jig is RC60 so once and done for the saw blade. A good file lasts about 10 or more dovetails. But the jig is hard enough not to wear out quickly.

Be quite sure you're done before removing the jig....there's no lining it back up once off. The undercuts are fiddly and you need to spend time there so you don't have angled cuts.

When finished, a nice smooth bottom dovetail and just a bit of wire edge to remove from the overhangs.

Go shooting. Don't forget, shortened barrels most likely need a taller front sight. So, the .320 high sight went in the trash with the barrel stub, this is a .450 to allow for heavy bullet Magnum loads and perhaps a touch of the file to get it right where I want it at 7 yards.
