That handgaurd is totally necessary.
Not sure if it's been mentioned before, but how about a set of old car keys?
Take 3 or 4 old ignition keys (late 80's or pre 1993 dodge ram/d150) & grind the tip
a little bit. If you put them in your hand & have the tips between the knuckles
so it will leave one hell of a mark or gouge the skin/eye's/etc.
Bonus of the keys is that I can't think of any place where car keys are illegal..!

In your hands, a key might be deadly. In the hands of a young woman, on the first strike( if she gets to strike) it’s going to move out of position or fly out of her hand.
This may have been said but understand that less lethal options don’t always work as intended. OC spray takes a couple seconds to cook before the effects are felt, it’s not a bug spray effect where the attacker will curl up and stop, it can easily be fought through especially if she misses. Also she should familiarize herself with how it will effect her, because it will. If she’s down wind when she uses it she’ll absolutely get lung full of it and it’ll burn her eyes.
As for tasers, they’re really effective but typically two things happen..1) a bad connection. Sometimes the prongs will just not connect right whether because of clothes or movement or a number of reasons. 2) Once the cycle is over, it’s over. When we got exposed to it, it sucked ass for five seconds. Then after that I stood back up, had a “I don’t get paid enough for this BS” laugh, and we finished the class.
She needs to understand these things and have contingencies in the event they don’t work.
As for the brass knuckles made of keys…if she values the skin on and around her fingers, she probably shouldn’t do that. Sure it’ll suck for the attacker, but it’ll chew her hand up too and now the attackers blood is getting into hers and that’s just a bad day.
