This truck has been in the family for nearly 30 years. My stepfather bought it near new, in NJ, moved with it to FL 25 years ago, where it lived most of it's life in a garage, with minimal use. He gave it to me when he stopped driving back in 2018. At the time, it had a whopping 47K miles on it. Six years later, it's at 57K miles. We use it for dump runs, hauling hay, mulch, rock, have helped move friends and family. Has a few dents and scrapes, mostly good paint. Cab interior is in great shape, except the top of the dash, which is disintegrating, as these are prone to do. Almost no rust. 5.9L Magnum, auto, 2WD, long bed. Just had a bunch of front end work, as the steering linkage and ball joints were shot. The engine computer had to be replaced due to a lightning strike in 2021.

The truck's best quality is outstanding ride quality. It's a really comfortable truck to ride in. Braking is pretty poor. The 5.9 is a gutless pig. That may partly be because the transmission has some issues. I don't think the torque converter is working as it should, because the truck will bog when asked to pull a heavy load (like a 5000lb. trailer up a boat ramp). This got worse with the swapped engine computer, so that may be related. And the 2WD with the long bed is practically a "kick me" sign for getting stuck on any kind of slippery surface. The motor has also overheated several times due to a coolant leak, and burns a little bit of oil, although not dramatic.

I've always thought I would eventually sell it and get something with 4wd. But the more I think about it, the more I realize this truck might be a good candidate for a mini-restore project. The mechanical stuff would be my first priority:

1) Engine and tranny rebuild or swap for reman.
2) Reprogram the ECM to properly match the new/restored powertrain's ability.
3) Limited slip differential, to improve the truck's ability to get out of it's own way on bad surfaces.
4) Upgrade the brakes.

And then perhaps replace the dash top with an aftermarket unit, and lose the OEM radio/tape deck in favor of a modern sound system. Maybe some cosmetic work for the exterior.

Would welcome any comments regarding this particular make/model/powertrain, or any thoughts about whether this is worth it. In the end, after $ tally for the above list, I could probably find a beater 4WD truck that will outperform this truck in tough working circumstances. I could also keep the truck going in its current form, with just fixes for minor stuff like the coolant leak. It still does nearly everything I need it to do. The long bed is great for hauling. Doesn't look as cool as a short bed, but I've come to really appreciate it.

Almost all trucks I've ever had have been long beds. Only 1 of three I own now. Had to have a work truck most of my life.
Ok, that said. That 5.9 shouldn't need a rebuild nor the trans. I think you have a program problem between the trans and computer. Also a rear gear change might make a lot of difference. That dash will be an expensive fix, at least I think. The other things you're talking about is up to you. I'm faced with the same thing on an old car right now. If you put some good tires on the back, that should help a good bit for traction.
I also had an old 2x4 truck I didn't want to sell, but I wanted all the things you're talking about. I finally decided to buy a new truck. This was in 94. I had a F150. I special ordered a F250, 4x4, XLT with a 460 (7.5L). Still driving that truck as my daily driver. Truck is probably worth more than I paid for it new now. If I had to do it all over again, I would. Thing is, I don't like these new trucks. So you have to find a good older one or deal with the new ones. I hope in time the new ones will prove themselves

I have the same model truck as you, engine, bed, everything, only difference is the year model, mine is a 1994. I’ve put a little over 11k in it to make it roadworthy for my son. It’s been posted here for a few months and I occasionally (halfheartedly) bump it up. He and I both are secretly happy it hasn’t sold. The wife wants it gone, but having a decent and dependable truck around is a blessing.

I probably won’t ever get out of it what I spent, but it’s capable of doing anything that we need to do around town and on the farm.

Best of luck to you on whatever you decide.

Just looked at the ad. Very nice! Lots of familiar stuff there. Interior is identical, except my dash (under the dash rug) is literally falling apart.

If the power levels started after the pcm swap, Id make sure the one you have is correct. If so just have a shop tune the truck.

If you’re handy, install this in the rear. Maintenance free, zero clutches and automatic. Probably more than you want to invest if you have to pay someone to do it.

The dash? Better get used to it 😂

My Wife ask me years ago, why don't you get rid of that old truck and buy a new one. I told her, I ain't tried to trade you in have I??

Yes sir, one big crack in my dash and I’m considering a dash cover, but it’s not that bad like it is.
My Dodge is the only one I know that doesn't have a crack in the dash. And it's been outside most of it's life. 2005 model. My In law's is an 03 and it's decentagrated. It was inside most of it's life
