I am looking to start my first build and wanted to get some opinions from the experienced builders out there. With all the options out there it can be overwhelming for someone starting their first one. I am looking to build an SBR but would like to put the upper on a lower with a Sig brace while I wait on the stamp on the lower to come back. So I will be building two lowers. One to have as a permanent SBR lower and one as a pistol lower. I have been looking at the MK18 and really like the feel and over all weapon but I have been told you can build the same quality weapon for cheaper by building it yourself. I am also thinking of building the upper in 300 blackout. Look forward to the help and thank you in advance.

Quality of a home build versus say a DD Mk18 is debatable.
But if you do it right, you can have a very good quality rifle.
One thing about barrels under 14" - they are very very loud. Also you lose ballistic performance in the round as the propellant gasses have not accelerated the projectile up to the same velocities.
Just some things to think about.
I would start with intended purpose first and fit the build to suit your needs. Of course, it's your money, time, and materials so get what you want.

I say build. You can definitely come out cheaper. I just did a 7.5 blackout pistol (pending stamp, then it will be an sbr) and I think I have around $750 in it. It may not be a DD, but its a hell of a lot cheaper. I picked up a PSA 10.5 upper for it as well on one of their daily deals a while back. So for $1300 after stamp I have an sbr with both uppers? Can't justify the DD upper for $1200.
Thats pretty good. And the dd will have more resell value than a home build. But will you ever sell after paying for the stamp? I like to build because ive never seen an off the shelf rifle thats exactly what I want, but you cant go wrong either way
That is a darn nice rifle! hard to go wrong there.
