Not a valid observation. The 38 sp originated as a black powder round, and required the large case capacity, the 380 was designed for smokeless powder.
Take a wimpy round and loose any extra pressure advantage the automatic would normally have, and blow out any extra gain in the gap between the the cylinder and the barrel.
For decades the 38 special was considered the minimum acceptable carry/duty weapon. The round has certainly benefited from the advent of smokeless powders and most modern revolvers manufactured are warrantied for +P rounds.
The latest generation of individually CNC'd projectiles provide (for a price) the kind of expansion that used to be only available from a minimum acceptable carry/duty round, to the lesser rounds.
I like the choice of a revolver for reliability. I chose S&W 642CT's for stocking stuffers a couple years ago for family members. No problems with limp wrists, FTF, or FTE. Double action only and CRIMSON TRACE lasers for additional accuracy. I doubt that anyone in my family is ever going to have as much training or range time than I have. If a revolver ever fails to go bang. Pull the trigger again and it'll rotate another round into line with the barrel and drop the hammer on a new round until you don't have any left.
While the 9mm and 38 spl are comparable.
