22 Mag or 17 HMR

The 17 HMR just looks like there is no projectile at all. I guess speed does it all. If it's nothing but a target gun I get it but if hunting is a critical concern then I just can't see the bullet mass for coyotes, bobcats and game that size. My father bought a Taurus pistol in 17 HMR. I looked at him like man what where you thinking. God bless his soul. The Winchester mag round with a 30 grain hornady polymer tipped round will hit 2,200 fps. That's hauling butt for a 22 round.

I have CZ 455 with two bull barrels, 22mag and 17HMR. At 50 yards I find them equivalent. Beyond 75 yards the 17 is definitely more accurate and consistent than the 22 mag. At 100 yards there is no comparison. This is my only experience with these two rounds but on the other end I have tried several different bullets.

I have Sako Quad with 17HM2, 17HMR, 22lr, and 22WMR barrels. I use 22WMR for larger critters out to 100yd and 17HMR for further distances. I use FMJ ammo for critters I'm going to eat. 17HM2 is my favorite to remove small critters I'm not going to eat.

Oh, man. The reason I don't like the 17HMR for hunting is the extensive damage it does. I've shot two squirrels with one (that was two too many) and it basically destroys a quarter to a half of the animal. I've also read repeatedly that they are deadly on yotes out to 150 yards.

^ Really I would thought that that round would be a little week at 150 on a yote. Oh well you learn something new every day. If it wasn't for the cost of ammo the .222 swift or 22-250 would be the ticket. That's one advantage of the 17.

Yep, a fast center fire is much better than a 17HMR, but the laws for legal hunting weapons on public land in Georgia means there are times you can't use anything but a rimfire. A recent change in the law has opened up late season hunting to centerfire rifles for fur bearers, hogs and yotes, but the early small game season still restricts you to rimfire.

Son laughed at my 17hmr when I told him I bought it for yotes. Same son shoots ar.... Borrows my 17 , gets in box stand behind house, turns on fox pro has one come in wide open shoots, yote piles up like sack of potatoes.....son returns says " can we go to store, I need one of these"... PRICELESS!!

Dynamite comes in small packages...

I don't use mine for hunting food, only for extermination.
