I know everyone will have an opinion on this but am looking for what one might recommend as a good .22 LR for youth. I already have a 702 Mossberg plinkster. I am looking to get another for an Appleseed event. A friend of mine recommended a Henry.

I have a 15 yr old and a 6 yr old. The 6 yr old is showing interest. :)

Thanks,

Robert

So many choices.. Is it for the 6 year old or the 15 year old? The Henry is awesome and they make a Youth model that the stock is an inch or more shorter than the standard.

I love my Smith&Wesson m&p 15-22. Not sure if it would be too big for the 6 year old but it's pretty light weight. I have at least 2500 rounds through mine and can only recall a few ammo related failures to fire. A shorter 10 round magazine might be better for shooting prone with the 15-22. Very easy to break down for cleaning too. If I recall, Appleseed recommends a rear sight with windage and elevation.

If you want it for an Appleseed, a Henry is a terrible idea. They are nice guns, but not at all what you want for that type of shooting.

I would recommend a savage rascal or cricket for the young one to start with. A 10-22 might also be good if you chop a little of the stock to shorten the length of pull. My daughter started on a cricket and now has a shortened 10-22. I have another full length stock when she gets a little bigger and stronger. The 6 year old should be able to safely handle whatever rifle you give him in the standing position. If he can't hold it up, or has to lean way back, it's too big.

The older one can handle anything. A marlin 795 is a great budget rifle also, very similar but nicer than a Mossberg plinkster.

I'm a volunteer instructor with Appleseed, feel free to pm me in the future if you have any questions. Are you signed up for an event now? I will loan your kid a cricket if you are coming to the Macon or Roswell shoots next month to try out for the day.

Thanks Freedom.

I figured the Henry probably was not the way to go with the Appleseed. I was thinking of the cricket for the young one. She wants the pink one....LOL. My son yes, you are correct can handle anything. I'll have to look at the marlin 795.

I can't make it to the Macon or roswell event when I looked at our schedule. I was looking to go to the one in Summerville in September.

if you go with the 10/22 there are probably 100 different stocks available for it, maybe 20 different barrels, 5 or 6 trigger assemblies, etc. etc.

You can spend $200 on a basic 10/22 or you can buy a "aftermarket" everything and spend $1500 on a "10/22". buy the basic 10/22 and then spend some money on upgrades or changes to fit the kid.

My 7 year old daughter is showing some interest, been looking for a deal on a Crickett or Rascal but will take her somewhere and see how the LOP is on those, or if I should just get her a different stock for one of my 10/22's.
