The Remington 7400 has a new version called the 750 Synthetic. It looks like a slightly cheaper and uglier version.
If that gun fits her, great.
If she likes pretty guns, the Browning BAR ShortTrac is the ideal, but it's over $1000 these days.
Perhaps the AR-10 line of guns is the way to go, with a .243 barrel in a rifle designed for the .308.
Does Remington still make the R-25 rifle in both .308 and .243? They used to, 10 years ago.
(Although that one's still going to be nearly $1000 too).

DPMS has a .243 "Lite Hunter" that looks good.

But, at $1400 retail price, it will lighten your buddy's wallet too!
One good thing about an AR pattern rifle is that you can use a telescoping stock if the girl needs a shorter length of pull. Or, you can use an M16A1 type fixed butt stock, which has a shorter length of pull than the A2 or later models.

Parts that are typically compatible between the AR-15 and AR-10
  • Buttstock assemblies
  • Triggers and trigger springs
  • Bolt catch roll pin (Armalite Style only)
  • Hammers and hammer springs
  • Pistol grips (a spacer may be needed for certain models)
  • Receiver extension (Buffer Tube)
  • Disconnector and disconnector spring
  • Buffer detent
  • Magazine release buttons and springs
  • Safety selectors
