I wouldn't necessarily advise using a carbine buffer in a rifle tube without some sort of bumper (spikes makes one). I've never tried it though.

The weight of the buffer adjust the dwell time to compensate for gassing issues. If the gas port is the correct size for your gas system, then all rifles should run a carbine buffer with no issues. If you start getting failure to extract and double feeds, then go with a heavier buffer to slow the bolt action down in order for the gas pressure to bleed off the barrel before the extractor tries to pull the spent case out.

As I understand it, though, the length of the buffer vs. the tube (rifle or carbine) can have an impact too.

I went and took some pictures to show why it may not be a good idea to run a carbine buffer in a rifle tube without a bumper.

The buffers are two different lengths. This could matter...but why?

Well this is the bcg pressed fully against a rifle buffer, rifle spring in a rifle tube. Notice the space left between the gas key on the carrier and the receiver.

The gas key never contacts the receiver during the recoil cycle.

Here is the carbine buffer, rifle spring in the rifle tube.

See how they touch?

If the gas system is perfect, then maybe it's not a problem. But if the key is contacting the receiver as the rifle cycles, then you may have problems down the road.

Impressive Hank! Could have even saved another .5oz by going with the non-beavertail Hogue. Lol

Hi jack oat. This rifle started in the planning stage right after the lpr class. I went home and weighed the rifle i was running and it was 8lbs 9.4ozs. I thought after running and gunning all weekend, there had to be a better option.
