4 SIG Cross rifles to 1,000yds

What was your impression of the Cross in .277 at distance vs. the .308? I'm interested in getting a precision bolt gun, but I'm just ignorant enough to buy a gun in a caliber I'll regret later. I've shot .308 before, but never in a manner to really establish an educated opinion.

It was much flatter shooting, of course. Makes it easier, but there’s a huge difference in costs.

Me and the three guys I elk hunt in Montana with are all using SIG Cross rifles this year.

All 3 were completely disassembled, so that the barrel nuts could be properly torqued, and the rifles reassembled correctly.

3 are standard 16” models in .308. 2 of those are topped with Nightforce NX8 F1 2.5-10x50mm MOA-XT, with the 3rd (mine) a Nightforce NX8 F1 4-32x50mm.

2 of the .308’s are using Federal Terminal Ascent 175grn loads, that chrono’ed at 2457.6 and 2453. The 3rd (mine) is using Choice Ammunition 165grn AccuBond that chrono’ed at 2686.

One .308 is using a SilencerCo Scythe Ti suppressor, while mine and the other are using the Omega 300 from the same company.

The 4th Cross is chambered in .277 SIG Fury with a 20” cold-hammer forged barrel, launching SIG Ammunition 155grn OTM at 2839.4. That one wears a Nightforce NX8 F1 4-32x50mm and a SilencerCo Hybrid 46.

The four of us drove to Cool Acres Sporting Camp in Swainsboro GA. We had previously ran the rifles to 400yds on my private-use range at home. We confirmed zeroes and dope, then ran all 4 rifles out to 1,000yds, at 100yd increments.

None of us plan on shooting at game at that distance, but it’s an excellent way to learn your setup, as well as instill a great sense of confidence in yourself and your rig.

I had 10” leather wraps made for all four rifles by The River Styx Supply Company. I’ll have pics later. He did a superb job. They look fantastic, and fit like the proverbial glove of the non-OJ type.

I've read about the accuracy with the 277 Fury and how flat it shoots. What was your experience with it and did you get to see first-hand if that stands true or not?

The more I've read on the .277 fury, the more impressed I get. That is a NASTY round. My only questions right now are towards barrel life, and how accuracy is affected as the round count increases.

It was very accurate and flat-shooting. Can't remember the dope to reach 1,000yds.

It was impressive. Accurate and flat.

The long action hybrid cases don't interest me much for what I'd use them for nowadays. Everything I need to do at distance, I can do with my .280AI.

Now, take the .277 Fury hybrid case, turn it into a hybrid-cased 7mm-08, and launch 160grn AccuBonds at around 2890fps from a 20" tube, and I'm interested. Do what my .280AI does with 4" less barrel, from a short action, and I'm game.

The 2 other guys won't take shots at nearly the distance I will, so their scopes will work for them.

It wasn't really the mag range I was talking about. That extra 1" and 1 ounce is worth it for the image quality difference in the 4-32. Even if I locked my 4-32 at 20x max, I would still choose it over the 2.5-20 (which I have owned before). The 4-16 ATACR, completely different story, which is what that gun wears now that used to have the 2.5-20.

Sig was saying 3000 fps from the .277 fury initially in the 16" tube. Looks like they were off a bit. I don't like having 22" for 7 PRC, but its not terrible with a folding chassis and great performance at standard pressures with 175g cartridges. 300 PRC is a significant jump in recoil which is seemingly unnecessary in North American unless we are talking pure dangerous game or possibly entry level ELR. IMO 7 PRC is the practical, modern day .300 Magnum replacement, especially for those who don't reload.

I agree. I've yet to turn my 4-32x up higher than 12x in Montana, but I much prefer the scope over the 2.5-20x.

With the PRC rounds out, I'll never own a belted magnum again.
