44mag/44spl subsonic hunting

Slightly off-topic. Never seen this company before, but they have some 777 grain 45-70 loads. I just order a few boxes to see how they do.

It appears that it will stabilize in the typical 1:20 twist, per the Berger Calculator.

BC: 0.869 estimated (https://blackbasin.com/tools/coefficient-calculator/) (as a round nose model)
Caliber: 0.458"
Weight: 777 grains
Length: 1.645" (based on back calculating the length of a .458 diameter cylinder of lead that weights 777gr)
Mv: 1050fps
Twist: 1:20 (Typical Marlin 1895 twist rate)
Temp: 70F
Altitude: 1000ft

I'd still test a few unsuppressed before risking wiping out some baffles/end cap.

100%.

Good thing is, I'm shooting the same rifle that they supposedly use as their test rifle.

Subsonic means running less than @ 1100fps...
I personally believe this is inadequate for deer hunting, especially at a distance one might feel he could hit with a rifle.
-- 2 cents --

Every deer I’ve slapped with a 300gr xtp 44 sub died where he stood. Easily accurate under 200 yards too.

Believe this was actually an ODT shoot years ago

I'd be curious to see if all of these 44 magnum hunting rifles which were made for 240 grain bullets at 1500+ feet/sec.

and having the rifling twist rate ideal for that load ...

would these rifles work with a 300 grain bullet moving barely over 1000 fps?

If you want to shoot subsonic you have a firm limit on your velocity--- therefore to get more "killing power" all you can do is shoot a heavier bullet.

But that may require a faster twist rate in the bore.

The 77/44 was my choice because of the 1:20 twist rate.

So essentially these 44 mag subsonics are running like a 44 spl. What's the point? Almost all of the 44 spl offerings are subs with a few exceptions. And a soft point or JHP will have no problem putting a deer down as long as you don't shoot them in the rump. I'll find out next year. I have a 45 cal suppressor coming early next year and I plan on getting a 44 rifle to put it on.

You can make some good handloads faster and heavier than most boxed 44spl. It’s not drastically faster but like 900fps vs 1100. Plus you can get some quality projectiles and then boom you have a super quiet hard hitting deer harvesting machine.

In the world of silent shooting you can’t go faster so gotta go wider and heavier.

What other bolt gun is shooting 300+gr subs?

I currently load 44 spl. I load it for a revolver and had never thought about the subsonic aspect. I've been loading 240 jhp. I'll do some more of those but I'll start looking for bigger and heavier. First I have to get a 44 rifle with a threaded barrel. I do have a 450 Bushmaster AR. I'm going to get some of the Hornady Sub-X for that. That's a 395 gr quiet thumper.

Any thoughts on suppressing a 45-70?

OK, I thought my 600gr bullets were ridiculous. This ^ is insane! :faint:

PS: What's up, Lax! Good to see you around!
