I'm looking into my new hunting rifle for hogs and deer. There have been many times i've had a heard of 5-10 hogs run up on me in the stand and my bolt gun didnt have the follow ups to get it done. We have medium sized piece of land and the longest shots i will be making would be 250 yds. My initial thought was to go to an AR in .308, specifically the Smith and Wesson MP 10, that is until i started looking into the 6.8. The initial pros of the 6.8 to me is the convenience of slapping the 6.8 upper on one of my current .556 lowers, but is the 6.8 as effective on large pigs/deer as the tried and true .308? And as accurate?

Cons would be ammo. I can reload the 6.8, but initially how hard is it to find the 6.8 SPC in your local stores? im not worried about .308 i have plenty of hand loads from the thousands of rds i have bought over the years.

Also, would building a 6.8 upper be basically the same process as building your typical .556 upper? as in would there be any specific differences that could sacrifice accuracy (i.e adjustable gas block, barrel nut torque specs, BCG metal)

Thanks for the input

I had a lightweight r700 in 6.8 when it first got popular. The recoil was weird. The barrel jumped straight up. The bipod would leave the table.

I've looked into this before and I stuck with 308.

I really tried to talk myself into the 6.8 but ammo is the same price as 308 and I can reload 308 for about the same as well.

The only benefit to 6.8 I saw was a light weight rifle and the ability to swap out uppers on a typical AR.

300 blk was the same way, and to me, I may as well just be using my .45 if I am going to hurl a 220gr bullet at subsonic speeds. But at least it uses a standard AR bolt and mags. Sure, I can amp up to a 125gr supersonic, but the 308 pushes that same projectile at 3,000fps.

Will a 6.8 work for deer and hogs? 300 blk? Yes, absolutely, but it doesn't have the versatility, or power of a 308.
