6.8 or 308 for hunting

I normally hunt with 7.62x39 since average shot is under 50 yards and 150 would be max (once in 20 years so far). I got a 6.5G upper just to check it out and liked what I saw in terms of ballistics and ammo choices.

I love my 6.8. Have 308 as well, but the AR upper compatibility is awesome. The ammo is easy to find and if you reload then even better. ARP makes some of the best barrels out there. Here is my 6.8 SBR. It is my go to hog gun for anything under 200 yards and does great.

"That'll do, Pig."

I run both the 6.5 Grendel and 308. Between the two I like 6.5 better in regards to accuracy and quick follow-up shots.. But I'd have to say since most of my shot opportunities are under 100yds I usually hunt with the ol' 45-70

I own uppers in 5.56, 6.8, 300, 762x39, and 458 socom. I previously owned a 308 semi auto. I also have a 243 bolt gun.

I hunt white tails and feral pigs in GA.

My opinion is that 6.8 is the right balance of performance and weight for my needs.

I like 6.8 over 308 because I don’t need the added range or weight of the 308. Most of my shots are under 100 yards and my max sight distance (from my stand) is 250 yards.

I was underwhelmed by the performance of the 458 last year. One deer down but he ran much further (50+ yards) than all of those taken (5) in previous years with the 6.8. The ammo is ridiculously expensive and the mag capacity is not good.

300 is a lesser caliber IMO than 6.8 spc. Its main virtues are sound suppression with a can out of a short barrel. I have taken one large boar shot between the eyes at 50 yards with an 8.5” suppressed 300 but I’ve lost two deer that were shot in what I thought were vital kill areas. With what I consider to be an effective deer hunting setup (16” barrel and 90-120 grain hunting ammo), there really is no benefit to 300 over 6.8 other than the parts commonality of mags and bolt. Since I have the 6.8 bolt and mags already, that’s a moot point for me.

I may try with x39 this year but did not have my setup ready to go last year. I have no experience hunting with this round.

I have had very good results with my 6.8 spc so far: 5 for 5 and not a single one has gone more than 30 yards. I typically aim for a broadside heart/lung shot.

I am not a caliber fanatic: a good shot with any of these should yield results. However, my experience has made me a believer in the 6.8.

X39 with Wolff HP ammo is deadly on whitetail under 150 yards. I've taken most of mine with this round. Just know that you are shooting 1-2 MOA ammo and plan accordingly. Under 50 yards it doesn't matter.
