7.62 Cartridge identification

I bought this piece of WW2 trench art and am researching whether it is authentic. This 7.62 cartridge is in the center so I thought if I could date the cartridge that would be a clue. Of course someone could have added it later but this is worth a try. Clearly the shell is 1945 but I have concerns about the EGA.
Let me know if anyone has any info. Thanks.

What makes you think it's 7.62 ? As far as I know in WWII the Russians used a 7.62, the Germans were 7.92.
 
I don't know. I can't even verify that the stamping is in fact a 17. My comment was merely an example, not research.... We need to keep bumping the post to the top so one of the milsurp guys sees it.
