Thinking about doing a 9mm AR. Been looking around the web for uppers and keep finding different
products. Some use standard AR hammer some don't, mag. well block??

Anyone here ever build one or have experience with one? Please school me, it seems like a good fun idea but I do not know the +'s and -'s.

Thanks

Yup!

I suggest getting a ramped bolt so that you don't have to use the notched Rock River hammer.
I happened across one for cheap a while back, but CMMG makes a good ramped bolt

You can use a dedicated 9mm lower(also made by CMMG) or you can use a normal AR lower and use a mag block. I recommend the Hahn precision top drop in block.
I got my lower for a great price from Classic City firearms, but here is the dedicated 9mm lower

Here's the Hahn mag block, again I recommend the top loading model.

For mags I have had no failures from these

I wanted to build one recently when I got a deal on a stripped PSA lower. But the 9mm complete uppers cost about as much as a complete 223 rifle. Makes very little sense to me when you consider the 9mm upper is a straight blowback design with less machining involved. I wanted one because I already have a good supply of 9mm and wanted to build one using Uzi mags. But it's just too expensive.

I built my own rifle under $750 not including the optic and sights.

Really good info. Laxguy. Joebob's price on the dedicated lower ain't too bad considering the
mag. block costs 170. Was going to do the build myself since PSA made so many offers so many of us
could not refuse. I have a lpk and a lower just need to get a mag. block and an upper with the ramped
bolt. Not committed to doing this yet but it's looking a bit more doable than I thought.

I've got one built but waiting on one last part. If you're building a "pistol" or SBR setup, I recommend adco firearms for barrels (4", 5"' and 7").

I went with the Hahn dedicated mag block but would recommend going with the cmmg if the lower will be 9mm only - because it's less $$$ overall. You'd probably save about $50 by buying the cmmg.

Also, I didn't go this route but you can buy an olympic arms complete rifle (google olympic arms k9) for about $750 - 800. They take a proprietary and expensive magazine but they've gotten pretty good reviews. Also, the decent colt-system mags run $35 to $40 so not a decent savings over the $50 Olympics.

Just my thoughts after going through the process...

Based on the price of the magwell block, I would recommend someoen pay the extra cost and get the 9 MM lower. By the time you buy a block and a regular lower, you spend more that the 9 MM lower usually runs.

BTW, 9 MM AR is a blast to shoot!!
