9mm or .40 for personal protection?

Doesn't matter. They both suck as compared to a decent rifle. Relying on a sidearm to keep you alive is a bad place to be regardless. If you shoot one better than the other, that's the 'best' for you. That said, 9MM will certainly be cheaper.

Yeah, that's all nice and dandy, but try lugging around a rifle CCW.

Infantryman instead of the Sigma look at the SD series S&W makes. The triggers are much nicer and the come factory with a tritium front sight. I owned one and loved it. Trigger actually felt better to me than the M&P 40 I had. Forsyth county pawn always has good deals to check. As far as ranges check out Trigger Time in Flowery Branch. Great people there and can help you get a good start and have a nice range.

Get the Sigma, learn the ropes with it. They've been reliable, and at normal handgun distances it should perform fine with some trigger time.

Having the Sigma now sure beats having nothing till later. The only reason I mentioned the XD is I've seen some near new XD's sell for around $350.00, I only paid $419.00 out the door for my subcompact at a shop in Carrollton.

oh, and if you're wondering which pistol to get, let me save you some time. So many of us fought it, and all ended up reaching the same conclusion. We should have saved lots of pennies and bought hks, realized they were overpriced, sold the hk and bought two glocks to begin with.

Even a .22 will protect you. Its if you can shoot right! So if you're rich and can afford ammo for practice, I'd go with the highest caliber possible.

GO to a indoor range that rents firearms and shoot one of each. I would go with the .40 for the knockdown power but if you shoot the 9 better go with it. Niether gun is good if you can not hit what you shoot at. I would go .40
