A Little Off-road

May be to far for you. Try looking up Prentice Cooper State Park.

Look up Prentice Cooper State Park. Its a drive to get there but it's worth the drive.

This is probably your best bet. Majority of the roads are fine. There is one that might give you a bit of a challenge. I ride atvs up there sometimes. Fun and fast, nothing crazy unless you get on the rock crawling sections.

Haley Road at Prentice Cooper, as mentioned above, can be fun, especially in wet weather. Plus, there's plenty of hiking and good overlooks of the Tennessee River Gorge (Snooper's Rock is the best known, Ransom Cove is probably my favorite). They've been logging in there, so be careful on the drive in if it's dry (the log trucks aren't worried about the speed limit or other vehicles from what I've observed and the main road gets really dusty, easily concealing any oncoming traffic).

Little River Canyon's Backcountry area (Alabama) is another good place up this way. It's got a couple hours worth of roads, with two river crossings that are safe and easy unless we've had a lot of rain. The roads are well suited for a stock/ daily driver type vehicle. There's also enough attractions in the area to make for a good day trip: Little River has some good swimming holes, the Canyon drive, DeSoto Falls, etc.

Old Bucktown Road in Ellijay was mentioned above. It was graded and closed to motorized traffic several years ago. I've heard some folks talk about running it lately, but I haven't verified that it is actually back open. We're going to be up that way in a few weeks so I'm going to check it out. The NF in general is probably the best place to go and explore.

Other areas worth checking out are the FS roads between Cohutta and the Ocoee River and the Tellico Plains/ Cherohala Skyway area. Farther from Atlanta, but worth the drive. Plus you get away from Atlanta for longer.

He sure to take the family and a picnic they'll love the overlook's of the river. Before you go call to see if all the trail are open. They close some depending on the weather and hunting season. Prentice Cooper wma
