A question about shotshell reloading, please?

As others stated above, it's a no-win economics reloading situation because lead shot has become so expensive. If you are loading specialty rounds, that might be worthwhile.

I keep a 12ga Lee Loader (single die/loading setup for shot shells) for manually reloading rounds. I also have a .30 cal round ball mold that I can use for buckshot. I keep a bag of wads and some 209 primers on hand. I can make a decent, home made 2 3/4" buckshot load with birdshot hulls the supplies on hand. Otherwise, I just stock up on factory 12ga ammo.
This, is exactly what I have in mind, also.
Thanks.
I ordered a Lee to put up for just such an occasion.

Seems like a deal depending what you're looking for.. I started saving most of my own 12ga. Hulls for some reason, I doubt I will ever get into it. I didn't realize how much lead shot is! Even with American reloading $1.89/lb for 7 1/2 w/10% off OOS, that equates to 11.8¢ per OZ. When you can still buy 1oz. 7 1/2's for 29¢ a shell out the door.

Casting Slugs and Buckshot, that would be a different story. 1,446lbs, $580 invested, puts it @ 40¢ a pound.

I am capable of reloading just about everything in pistol and rifle, but haven't ever equipped to reload shotshells.
I only have 12 GA equipment, so I am looking at the Lee Shotshell setup for now.
Anyone have experience and/or advise as to their usefulness and any alternatives?
Thank you.
Appreciate it.

I have one of these shotshell loader by Lee. They are just what I'd call a Hobby \ Hunter setup.

Currently there aren't a lot of defense loads available ,but there's still quite alot of #7.5 & #8 shotshells out there in the big box stores. I pretty much use this press for making buck & ball defense loads out of birdshot loads.

Empty the shot out and recast it into buck shot & pumkin balls. Same weight replaced as was removed ,then recrimp with the Lee . ;)

Some will say that's alot of trouble ,but tell me where to buy 100 rounds of buckshot for $22 :pop2:

Another that just buys 12 ga. Have a fine MEC put up,

Late 70's you could buy quality target loads for $3.50 a box in case quantities - just didn't make sense to reload even when shot was cheap.

Got to where I only loaded duck loads, and then they brought in steel shot. Even in the day, the quality lead duck loads were outrageous, especially if you were in East Jesus like I was. Two hardware stores the only place that carried ammo.

I think the Lee has a place if you want to develop a specialty shell and don't want to load a lot of them.

I use a lee load all to make snap caps with the same weight and feel of my normal ammo. 12ga snap caps are like $15 a pair, so a mag tube worth would have cost more than the press and the box of shot donor ammo. The lee does the job, but the crimp is a bit fiddly. For the $40 you pay for it, it really is dandy though.

I have one in 20ga. I got it on Amazon for 50 bucks shipped. I load birdshot and slugs on it. I also have a ratty old MEC SuperSizer for 12ga that was given to me. I load slug, buck and birdshot on it. Is it worth it? I think so. I scrounged thousands of hulls from the Robins skeet range when I used to work on base and I have a "few" buckets of wheel weights to melt down for slugs/buck.

I actually shot some 20ga slugs today I loaded and they did pretty good.
I say go for it.

NNo. don't waste your time & money. Lee makes some good stuff for reasonable but this one is not it.

get a MEC and some powder bushings starting at #22 - 26 to 32 depends on powder choice. Look online for a bushing chart. Hulls are hard to find and not all are worth trying to load. Use AA hulls for sure. Others will mess up when you final crimp the plastic is so crappy. I have also noticed a shortage of shotgun primers too. You'll want 209's. If you get all past that and find a shot shortage just remember not to use a good shotgun but if you can put it in the power piston it will come out the barrel at speed. Plain old bb's , used primers, marbles, etc. all will shoot out in a real emergency. really, just about anything you can get in it. But don't be using that in your nice guns.
