I would definitely choose 7.62x39 because I prefer .30 cal projectiles, it is accurate enough out to 300 yards, it is cheap, and it is way more abundant. As far as brands go, opinions vary greatly and other than IO, I will say most of them are just fine. American AKM's are still somewhat unproven and reviews are mixed, but the ones I have handled seemed very nice. Personally I like the Romanians. They are made the way an AK is supposed to be made, they have chrome lined barrels, and they are utterly reliable. P!us they will not break the bank, although prices are going up everyday. You can still find a decent deal if you look around. Heck,there are lots of great rifles out there. For the money, I like the Romanians, but around the same price you can pick up a nice Serbian and they are very good rifles too. I think Arsenals are overrated and prices way too inflated, but they are fine rifles, no doubt. If I had one I would sell it and buy two WASR 10's. But that's just me. Good luck.
