Another SHTF question!

I have to add that I have NEVER heard anyone say "Man! My AK won't shoot X brand ammo!". I have a DMPS that turns into an instant single shot if I load the mag with Tullammo. But my AK gets impatient for MORE of every brand I can cram in a mag. Guess, I'm going to name my AR Morris...Don't be finnicky Morris... ;)

As long as I feed it what it wants it's great though. Loads out light and shoots superbly. I AM trying to avoid any eletronic sighting on both platforms though because I feel if we enter a long period of SHTF batteries will become scarce and it is always best to KISS(Keep It Simple Stupid) with combat prep.

This is the same approach that I am taking. Not only batteries but mud, water and blunt force trauma and I'm right back to the peep hole...

I figured all the military guys who read this would go with AR but I'm happy to see that most of u agree with me that the AK platform is more reliable

What variants of the platform do we have in consideration here, depending on the make and what I have to choose from the answer may vary widely. A Century AK vs a Colt M4, I'm going to pick up the M4, a post ban DPMS with an NCstar scope vs an Arsenal AK the Arsenal. There are a lot more questions I am going to be asking then just what platform it is. All things kept constant, however, with what is around me, ammo availability, and parts and components, training, and what I have easily available I would choose the AR.

Anyway, long point short, platform don't mean dick in my opinion, its the quality of the build that concerns me as far as a particular gun's reliability and accuracy that I am going to look at as well as many other factors. But as far as claiming blanket the AK is more reliable, I've seen more issues out of century build AKs then any other platform, in the past, five years I've seen at least a dozen of them fail at my local range. Only seen two ARs fail, both DPMS, one was garage gunsmithed, the other the owner didn't hardly know which end of the gun the bullets came out of. Also to be fair though, I've seen one M1A blow up, a glock jam up but good, 1911 fail, and a Beretta PX4 Storm compact bite the farm.

Also, take a look at Pat Roger's filthy 14 if you are a firm believer that all ARs are completely unreliable.

AR..in a "SHTF" situation there's probably going to be a LOT of migration so you can carry 2 loaded AR mags with the same weight as one loaded AK steel mag. I've never had amazing luck with AK's either, but my AR runs like a champ no matter what's in it. Dirty ammo, wet, dry, rained on..just keeps going with no problems. I'm pretty familiar with both platforms and believe I could handle myself with both, but militaries around the world have used the M16 for decades for a reason..

We've all seen it but never gets old..give me one of these

Food for thought. Most folks don't know the multitude of variations in the AK platform which can, will, and has gotten the uninitiated into trouble. Maintain your rifle. Learn it and absorb it. In my world an AR would be preferred.

I've had nothing but good luck from all my AR's and AK's as far as reliability goes. Dirty clean and in between...

I shoot the AR better, but I'm not bad with an AK74.

For now I think I'll just go with the AR platform.

My military experience was with A1's except the last year. If you even looked at sand, you had a single shot, at least the rifle I had. I don't remember the same problem with the A2, but I had that in a no sand environment. I always wondered if a stronger buffer spring might have cured my problems. Never got it muddy that I remember, or had to use it when it was freezing out. They used to say the benefit of the AK, was that it fit loose enough that it would function, dirty or not, but that's just scuttlebutt. I don't know if it's true. I shoot the m16 better than an AK.
