Anvil

I have several smaller anvils and pieces of railroad track. I'd love to get a 300-500 lb anvil, but for now I'll just keep hammering away on the RR track. Forget those 15 lb and 55 lb anvils Harbor Freight sells, cast junk from China. Won't last a week.

The square hole in the anvil face-toe is called a hardee hole. It is used to hold anvil tools, the most common being a hardee. Imagine a wedge with a square shaft attached to the bottom. A hot hardee is used to cut metal after it has been heated in a forge. Several other types of hardees and other anvil tools.

A good source of quality anvils is to visit a blacksmith guild meet. Alex Bealer Blacksmith Association in Atlanta or Ocmulgee Blacksmith Guild in SW GA. Blacksmith conventions usually have a marketplace where anvils, tools, etc can be purchased. There is a convention held in Madison Ga every other year.

Wayne Goddards $50 Knife Shop is a good source on basic knife making on the cheap.
