I've bought very little from ebay ever and never anything I cared one way or the other about 'wining'. Most of it is just 'buy it now' and done. There's a scope mount that I found that is a traditional auction by a private seller. It is apparently near impossible to find so I'd rather not get sniped at the last second. Are there any tricks other than just putting in your max and hoping the auto bid works out in your favor?

Send the seller a message and ask how much is he tryin to get out of it. If it is in your range make them an offer. They can always stop the auction and say it was sold locally.

Unfortunately his "buy it now" price is way too high and I assume that's his current asking price. I couldn't even figure out how to message him though. Auction ends tomorrow.

If your auto bid is the max you want to pay, that is all you can do. What I do is bid the amount I want to pay, then put a reminder in my phone 5 minutes before the auction ends.
If someone outbids me, then I can add if I really want it.

Don't bid at all, just add it to your watch list. Bidding just drives up the price. Be prepared to be on ebay 5 minutes before the auction ends. Watch the countdown timer and enter your max bid when there are only 15 seconds left. Entering your max bid now just encourages other bidders to out bid you and results in driving the price up, it's a pyschology thing. When entering your max bid with only 15 seconds left, your competition may not be online or if they are they will have to place several bids in just seconds to out bid you and in the process will run out of time.

Good luck.

What happens if 5 different bidders are using that for the same item?
From their Q/A section.
[h=2]What happens if two people are sniping the same auction?[/h]If two people are sniping the same auction then the highest bid will win. If they bid the same amount the first bid to reach eBay will win the auction.
