Any mower mechanics on here? ZT1 50 with 23hp Kawasaki FR691V engine. Spitting, surging and dying after 10 minutes of running

I would check coil resistance when it heats up (starts messing up) . Or put a new coil/test coil on it.

The first thing you have to do is diagnose it properly to figure out if it is fire or fuel/air mixture related. Then you will know what to check.
(There are several diff ways to go about this. It is just one of those things a mechanic usually does as to the way to diagnoses problems).

From reading your comments it sounds like it is fuel related.
(You say you have to nurse the choke when it messes up to get it back to garage).

You could have a float level not adjusted right, or hanging up. There could be any number of problems.
If you are at your wits end then you need to let someone else fix it. Nothing worse than a pissed off mechanic. I have been one for 35+yrs !! :becky:

A Honda engine has a low oil shutoff, make sure oil level is correct if so unplug the wire located on the lower part of the engine

You also may have an intake air leak….just from what the description and comments you make .
You can check this by getting it to run then spray carb cleaner or a little gas around the intake area and at base of carb…..To see if rpm’s pick up or engine surges. (You can also use a vacuum hose to listen to it.)
Just another “guess” ….

(Adding note, I see you replaced the carb so the leak wouldn’t or shouldn’t be at the base of the carb)
