Any self taught welders?

Had an old Cajun (Ship yard welder) teach me . I suggest a squirt gun (mig) for beginners ; had my youngest girl welding in about an hour. Clean/grind/sand/acid rub(a must for aluminum imho) whatever you’re welding . The cleaner the steel , the better the weld . Make a puddle and fill the gap👍🏼

Definitely can teach your self. Get a cheap flux from harbor freight and practice on scrap. I wouldn't weld anything structural or important. But it's definitely a skill you can develop without school or official instruction. And a flux is simple no gas and can weld most anything you would need to. Not going to weeks stainless or aluminum easily. But tig is definitely a harder skill to learn and would take much more time and practice but it's also possible.

It’s a lot easier to learn with mig with gas it welds smoothly and easier just learn the settings. Not great for outside though, wind has an affect.
Stick welding is cheaper to get setup but takes more practice
As others have mentioned cleaning area to be welded makes all the difference. GL

Check out local technical schools as sometines they have basic short courses to teach you the basics. I , too wanted to learn to weld once upon a time in my younger years and actually went to work with a company building water tanks. I am glad I got the experience but you can learn a lot in a short period of time at a technical school. Takes years to learn to set the heat just right with differences in rods and metals and still a lot of it will be trial and error. Expensive now to buy rods and metal is so high that you can’t experiment too much.
