Im just searching around looking for somewhere to shoot my new toy and came across Gun Site Hills out past Athens. Their site sucks but it looks like they do classes as well as competitions out there. The range goes out to 800 yards. I havent heard of or found anything even close to that distance around me. Im in Woodstock, so this would be a 2 hour drive, but worth it to me.

-Anyone been here? (pros/cons)
-Anyone taken a class here or somewhere else for distance shooting?
-Anyone have a better or closer range that goes to at least 4 or 5 hundred yards?

Yeah, the guy knows his stuff and is pretty particular about how he wants things done on his range. Make sure you give yourself as much time as you can. I went with a family member and we didn't get to shoot for about 2 hours and something because chief just kept talking and explaining to us about our rifles and what not. Only take a couple rifles and only about 40-60 rounds of ammo for a whole afternoon of shooting. That's a big con to me. You do learn a lot from Chief and he does keep the shooters safe. It's worth the drive out there. Make sure you take some spray paint with you, you'll need to repaint everything you shoot.

I go to GSH frequently. There's no place closer to Atlanta for such long range-- that's open to the public. Riverbend goes to 600 yards and would be closer to you, if you can get in there.

Chief's a character, but he has a nice setup.

You may find long-range shooting addictive. Or very frustrating, if you don't have the right equipment and ammo.

Sounds like I would enjoy talking to him as I have never shot past 200 yards and never owned a bolt gun until now.
Riverbend's site pretty much explains that Im not getting in there haha.

do i get a discount if i show up with a ruger gun site scout? i mean...its the same name and all ;)

i would love to do that sometime though for sure

Go there. Chief (Mike) is a really nice guy and funny as hell. Me and my buddy Sinac84 like it so much we did his bachelor party there. If you have never shot long range, Chief will take you under his wing and educate the hell out of you. Listen, learn and laugh. What could be better?

Honestly, this sounds perfect for me right now. May have to head out there this weekend.

Hmm, I am also interested, thanks for the info, care to elaborate a bit? Also it seems the range may be appointment only and the fees are $20 (very reasonable if so)?
I read through his site and he says that he takes pride in having a very safe range. He says the backdrops are short and everyone is slowly taking their time shooting, not out there rapid firing from the hip. Sounds like he only cares to have precision shooting at his place... Which is fone for me, just saying thats what the site makes it sound like.

You will need to call ahead of time, and make sure they'll be expecting you. That's usually not a big deal.

You can learn a lot from Chief or the other staff. I have not actually taken one of the classes there, but I suspect it would be worth the time and money, especially if you're new to shooting longer range.
