Anyone for a Dollar tree challenge?

I went by the one in loganville the other day and they had a big sign on the window advertising they are now selling steak......I'm not even going to ask what that came from

The dollar tree in union city is only 8minutes from me. I did almost all my food shopping there some years ago when i got laid off and money was tight for a few months. Back then i think my average was about $3 worth of food for a day, after supplementing it with veggies from the garden as well as some meat from the garden. Damn rabbits and squirrels....

Dollar tree has some pretty good stuff, but ounce for ounce you can usually beat most of the items at WalMart. I hit Dollar tree a few weeks back and for the hell of it grabbed a dollar jar of salsa. It was pretty darn good. The next time I was in WalMart I looked but they didn't have that size for the price. They DID have one at least twoce as big for 98 cents more so the advantage was still WalMart.

Really though, I don't think it would bve much of a challenge. You can put together quite the menu at Dollar Tree. Nothing fresh from the garden mind but dehydrated, like rice or pasta dishes, canned goods, crackers, cookies, chips, candy, etc, etc..

So.... back to the original post, anyone? lol I don't shop at dollar store, at least not for food. I'm going to include Aldi in my list. So OP, define "packable". Are you talking about backpackable or just that it can be packed in a box for a trip?

Sorry, I've been out of the loop due to other obligations. The July/August Issue of Backwoodsman has a good article on food for survival kits titled, "Your Backpack Is A Survival Kit." If you can get a copy I found it interesting. Although he doesn't reference Dollar Tree many of the foods mentioned can be found there. The challenge I think would be to create a days worth of food ie...3 meals equaling to 2000 calories that is light and packable. This would be an exercise in creating ideal calorie to weight ratios. It needs to be easily prepared for consumption on the go. Most importantly can it be made appealing to the old taste buds.

I would hope that if this is successful I could pick and choose the ones that are appealing for building up a stockpile of portable meals for camping, fishing, hunting, etc.
