Anyone go to grad school after their 20’s?

For too many years I've been saying the same thing. I could handle going to school full time again no problem. Working full time and trying to finish graduate degree before I die.... starting to increasingly sound like torture.
At least it kept me from getting married in my twenties ... that ended up being torture.

I was in college in 1970 but had lost my deferment so the draft (lottery #12) was hot on my heels. Headed to the recruiters, looked at the Army, said nope, looked at the Marines, said hell no, looked at the Navy and said, yep that's for me. His door was locked, and he was gone to lunch, so I went next door to the Air Force and enlisted and was guaranteed a job in electronics. Ended up copying Morse Code for 23 years. About year 22 I thought about going back to college. Took and Clep'd 5 or 6 subjects and together with what I had gotten before service I was well on my way to an AA degree and an AAS degree. Not overly impressive but it was a big step for me, I made Dean's list for the entire time and got very useful degrees, an AA in General Studies and an AAS in Intelligence Collection (hold the snickers please). I did notice that for the most part I was the oldest student in the class (older than some of the instructors) but since I was doing this for me I worked hard and did very well. Those two degrees, more than my dad ever got, seemed to help on my job resume and in my job hunts. So it is never too late to go back and take more classes. At 74, now that I'm retired I am looking for classes that interest me, not for the degree but for the information they provide.

They say the male brain doesn't fully develop until the mid 20's (Although my experience with this site indicates that most never mature beyond middle school level). I did much better in graduate school with less work so I think maturity is a big part of it. For those of you that did a military stint before college, you probably made the right choice for a number of reasons.

I did mine in the Air Force and there were many class sessions I attended in full MOPP 4 gear in condition RED in Gas Mask under the table but I still took part in the classroom discussion since many of my classmates were wearing the same gear and also under the tables. Exercise time and when the IG is in town always makes for an interesting time.

I went back for my MBA in my mid 30s via Kennesaw State. I worked full time and went to school fulltime but 2 months into it I got a new job w/ a lot more responsibilities than the old job. I graduated 20 years later (well, seemed like it at the time) w/ 3.9 GPA but dang that was one of the hardest things intellectually I've ever done. It was several years after graduating before I could even pick up a non-fiction book.

I can't say that it really helped my career either but I'd wanted an MBA since under grad school. There'd only been 1 or 2 folks on either side of my family to complete a graduate program so there was that too.

I’ll add some details so you ****ers can mock me for going after a ‘useless’ degree.
The program that made the offer is a MA in religion at a pretty well-ranked and known state school. I’d be focusing on modern Islamism. (It’s a really interesting and grossly misunderstood field) I haven’t accepted yet as I’m still waiting on an admissions decision from Harvard Divinity for a similar program. Im not sure what I’ll do if I get accepted to HDS. It’ll be a tough decision as I don’t think the aid package will be as good from HDS.

Does that mean you would have to move up there to attend, or do they have online? I grew up in Harvard Square. The housing is pretty steep in and around the area. I wish you the best 👌

I also met this guy while being deployed to GITMO

It is an entirely in person program. That’s part of what will make it a tough decision. Even with a hefty aid package, the state school will likely work out better financially. Housing up there is just absurd. $1500 for a bedroom is cheap in that area.

Oh man, this line “intended to finish a paper I was writing that considered what impact the young Syrian president, Bashar Assad, might have on the Middle East peace process. ”
There’s sooo much to unpack in the arc that was the Assad regime. ****ing Hollywood wishes it could write movies either that many twists and turns.

lol…….let me tell you about my ‘useless’ Political Science degree. It really helps me sell oaky Chardonnay to Buckhead Betty’s.
