My brother and i are trying to set mom up with really cheap or free tv in her home out in rome. She has had roku awhile and hates it...no local or "live" tv on roku. My brother hooked up a 50 mile radius antennae on her roof recently and it only pulled 6 channels so he returned it. I have been running a digital antennae for years so its one less bill i have and i love it. We are trying to stay supercheap, but at least get her local atlanta channels and a bit of entertainment....thoughts anyone? Thanks

I dropped DTV and went with an antenna over a year ago. I live in the sticks, so I had to get a BIG outdoor antenna and mount it on a 30' pole in my backyard. The bigger the antenna and the higher you get it, the better the reception. From what I read online, every 10' you go up with your antenna doubles the range. Also, there is nothing special about "digital" antennas. Yes, all channels are being broadcast in digital now, but even the old style antennas from years and years ago pick the signal up just as well as the latest and greatest "digital" antennas. Heck, if you live close enough to a broadcast tower, you can pick up TV channels with a coat hanger. LOL

My biggest fear about leaving DTV was the fact that I was going to lose my DVR. lol That thing had me so spoiled that I can't stand to watch commercials now. Well, it turns out that Channel Master makes a DVR for antenna TV....

You have to buy the DVR box (about $250) and add your own external hard drive for storage, but there are no monthly fees and the thing works great! I figure since I stopped paying DTV $80 per month over a year ago, my antenna and DVR have more than payed for themselves.

This is a good site for figuring out what channels you should be getting in your area, and what direction you need to point your antenna to get them. Just enter your moms address and the approximate height of the antenna. The site will give you tons of info....

The antenna you returned would have probably worked, but you need an in-line amplifier as well. Walmart has the amps for about 10 bucks.

There are online plans to build antennas, and that is what I did. Coupled with the amp, I get stations from 60 miles away. It is directional, so I have to turn it north for stuff from Atlanta, and south to get Macon.

I have just plugged some cheap rabbit ears into the amp and still get 70% of the stations that I get with my homebrew setup.

My antennas are all in the house, none outside or elevated above the 2nd floor.

I get 25 or 30 stations

Good points J jeep78

I forgot about the in-line amp. It'll make a big difference along with making sure your antenna is pointed in the right direction.

I like channel Master antennas. In Rome in would go with rooftop placement and a pre amp or regular amp. Bigger the better. You can hook it into your existing whole house junction with regular co ax .

I don't know what they do now but years ago the antenna installer in blairsville had a portable battery powered TV and he would walk all over your property and get on the roof etc

Sometimes you'd get great signal in one spot and almost nothing 20 feet away

He'd install the antenna where the signal was strongest

I bought an RCA directional antenna, mounted it on the roof using the mount from my Satellite dish and then aimed it based on the location of the nearest TV towers. You can use this site; https://www.tablotv.com/tools/; to locate the towers near you then point the antenna towards them. A compass will give you an approximate direction and you can fine tune from there. I am 26-30 miles from the towers and get over 40 channels. Been using free TV for 3 years and love not having that $100 a month TV bill.

Check out the Mohu Leaf. I had one and it worked well for the channels it picked up. It all depends on your location. I believe there is a place on their website where you can put in your zip code or something and they will tell you if it will work for you.
