anyone recommend a belgian malinois breeder?

Yep, so many breeders here in the states that they have bred the drive out of them. I tried looking at a bunch of dogs before I bought an import, but they lacked a lot of key drives.
Just damn. The last one I got was 20 years ago and I had to go out of state to get him. Every time I watch a dog show (my daughter makes me) and they describe what any particular dog being shown was bred for, I'm thinking "Not that one.", because the AKC primarily breeds for the swimsuit portion of a beauty contest and little else.

Have you considered rescue? I work with a rescue, The Malinois Ranch Rescue. We have dogs of all ages and drives - depending what you are looking for. There are some good breeders, but too many just breed a dog to breed them and then do not check into the potential buyers. 6-12 months later, these people get more than they bargained for and dump them in the shelters. It is a very sad cycle.

Good luck with your search.

I'd be very interested in that. Any more info? I looked at the website. It seems there's a lot of info, but not a lot of info about how to actually adopt a dog.

where is your rescue located?

Since we are Malinois and Dutch Specific (Working dogs) we are across the US. The main location is in West Tennessee, but I am in Metro Atlanta.

We are one of the only rescues that will take in aggressive dogs and dogs with a bite history. And we are also one o the few that will place with police departments and sport/bite work. (Qualified handlers only or those that willing to learn from an experienced trainer and not putting a dog in a dangerous situation to fail).

Visit our Facebook group at "The Malinois Ranch Rescue". If you are interested you can fill out an application on that page and when we get a dog that fits what someone is looking for, we will reach out. Since we evaluate every dog individually in order to place them in the right home, we have a higher success rate.

I hope this helps.

Depends on what you are looking for in your malinois. If you just want a family dog then you shouldn't have a problem finding one. If you are looking for a working dog you will spend much more than $1,000. My last one was 10K, but he was KNPV Metlof titled. By far the best dogs I've ever gotten were from De Bergakkers in Holland. I've had 3 from there. There are a couple kennels here in the states that import from him. Kasseburg K9 in Alabama gets dogs in from him all the time. I'm sure you know but Mal's are very active dogs so I hope you have plenty of time to spend with him.

Yep. I thought i wanted one too. Always had shepherds, and my cousin trains for several LEO depts. He assured me unless i had PLENTY OF TIME to devote to activities with a Malinois, i would be doing the dog a huge dis-service, and he would develop bad behaviors from lack of activity.
