The world of speed detection has morphed from the "Fuzz Buster", to more complex detectors like my V1, to detectors that link to GPS to delete false alerts(such as store sliding doors) and report red light cameras, to now smartphone crowdsourcing apps where users report picture taking by the mounties. There have been a few, but it appears that the current favorite is Waze. Of course the more that use it the better it works.

I don't yet have a smartphone(I'm a luddite), it's on the list, but does anyone here have any knowledge of how many use it in the metro.

I know I use it daily. I live near Rome Ga and drive to north Cobb everyday for work. It's a handy little app and I have found that it is really correct on the info. But once again it depends on how many people actually report. Luckily I have about 15 people who are hard core users that drive the same route I do. They report everything. Retreads in the road, broke down cars, and of course police on the side of the road either assisting someone or running radar. When it alerts you, it gives you the option to clear the event if its no longer there. Great app for populated roadways, but when you get off into small towns, not a lot of people update.

Hope this helps.

I missed this post before, just found out about Waze 5 days ago. The police and traffic tags are good but it's the route mapping that has me hooked. It's saving me about 10min in drive time from what was an hour drive. I love this app so far!

I've found that the trick is to check routes as you drive. If you leave for work at 7am, check the routes again every 15min or so and it updates your options based on the current traffic.
