Anyone work for the railroad?

wow i thought more than that would be via interstate than rails

good deal

Depends on how you measure it

If you measure it in dollar value of the freight
About 90% is moved by trucks

If you measure it in tons. About 90% is moved on rails

Basically if you have freight that's not very valuable and you can wait 6-18 weeks to get it there , you use rail

If you need it delivered unless than a week. or it's valuable
, You have to use a truck

valuable insight and that makes sense as well

Well I'm going to do a ride along tomorrow with the local short line that my buddy co owns. Pretty excited to get a little more insight into the job.

I'm a conductor now with Norfolk Southern from Atlanta to Macon. I had 20 years LE before riding the rails. PM me if you want any info.

My brother is with CSX - has been a conductor, Trainmaster and middle management during his time with them... He will probably see this tomorrow and chime in. First few years? Good money - but he lived in Birmingham, Mobile, Jacksonville, Covington, Virginia, etc... I agree w the comments above about the dispatcher position... A/c, set hours for the most part and good pay... It does seem to me to be a good ole boy network... Knowing a higher up or two certainly seems to have its advantages-
