Anyone work for the railroad?

You guys realize that most UPS and FedEx ground shippments move by rail right? As does just about anything else as intermodal traffic is on the rise. If it can go on a truck, it can go on a train. If you buy gas from citgo, shell, qt, Valero or BP in the metro area the ethanol comes in by rail. If you buy baked goods from walmart the sugar is shipped by rail. If you eat chipotle chicken, we got them fat for you. Jim Beam whisky? Yup we ship it. Carbon black for.Michelin tires. Even mundane things like Pringles and Clorox wipes.

Rail is still a very viable means of transport as long as you have the means for final delivery. A shipment from LA to Atl by rail takes 3 days usually.

Trucks are a important piece of the puzzle for the more local and regional deliveries. If you are fortunate enough to have rail access and need to ship a lot of product then rail is the best way to go. Consider a truck is limited to 80k lbs. Rail is 280k with 200k being product. 18 wheels don't impress us.

Chessie system was the company formed by the merger of the Baltimore & Ohio and the Chesapeake & Ohio. The seaboard system was a merger of the seaboard coastline, Atlantic coast line and L&N. Those 2 merged to form CSX. The 70s was a rough time for rail as many companies were forced to merge to stay solvent. Or in the case of Conrail 10 or 12 bankrupt railroads that the government bailed out. If you have an afternoon to kill pick a class 1 railroad and traces its lineage of mergers and buyouts.

Buddy of mine applied for like 5 years, got hired and trained, quit after working for a little less than a year. He hated it, but the pay, benefits, and retirement are awesome. If you want to talk to him PM me and I will give you his number.

I believe most new cars and trucks are shipped by rail to yards near where they will be sold and then loaded on trucks for final delivery to dealers. I worked for Trinity Rail while they were building Auto transport cars and hopper cars for grain and coal.
