How many times are you going to go around this same mountain? You know the answer is going to be Vortex Strikefire and I bet you've had 20 of them. Of course, it's only 2X but......
I have been eyeing a BSA Sweet .223. Like the idea of not having to do my mildot math or keeping a good dope sheet.
Get you one of these and tell us how you like it. You'll be the guinea pig!

Look into Mueller optics. Since your a fellow Chatsvegian swing by Discount Sporting Goods in Dalton and you can even touch the mystical beasts. I have one on my 10/22 (APV) and for the money I wouldn't have taken any other optic. For what its worth you can take that one for a test drive if you like.
You might consider Alpen. I don't think they are a real big company, but they have a no fault, no questions asked replacement warranty. Might be a little over $200. I think my 2.5x10 was around $250.
This is a 1-4 X24mm red dot from Mueller. Just a little over your price range, but maybe you can find one on sale.

Magnified...get the Nikon P223 Carbine model...its an awesome cousin of the M223. You will not be disappointed at $150
I want a Millet DMS- the donut dot scope. I think it's only 4x, but I don't plan on sending a 62 grain round 500 yards.
