Armed citizens and active killers. Things to consider...

The guy makes some very good points. I had already adopted his advice to up the anti on my personal carry weapon. For years, my personal carry weapon has been some form of 1911 platform in .45 acp. I became concerned about the 8 round single stack magazines and the somewhat limited penetration of the .45 acp round. My current carry pistol is a EAA Witness chambered in .38 Super. It more than doubles the magazine capacity, provides significantly more penetration, and surpasses the muzzle energy of the .45 acp. The full size Witness is certainly not as convenient to carry as a downsized .380 or 9 mm would be; but I feel that the other advantages outweigh the convenience factor. I do sometimes grab my SIG 938 and slip it into my pocket in a Genesis holster; but I always feel undergunned on those rare occasions when I do so.

Say you are at the mall and you hear gunfire. It's close, you see a guy drop into a weaver stance, shoot and drop a guy. He didn't shout out anything and you couldn't see if the guy he shot was armed. He hasn't moved since he fired.

Shoot, or don't shoot?

Pick wrong and go to jail.

The article pointed out that as a citizen we have no obligation to announce or order him to drop it.

If he only shoots that one guy? No, I'm not shooting him. If he starts shooting at other people, maybe. If he's shooting at me, yes...as I'm slipping backwards in my own poop, I'll be returning fire.

I have thought about scenarios like this many times. In the end the issues that arise when multiple good guys have guns outweigh no good guys having guns. Things can certainly get complicated quickly fo sho.

im always afraid im going to be misidentified as the active shooter if I attempt to move and engage someone who's committing violence outside of my immediate area. Settled on, get myself and whoever is with me the hell away, if I'm engaged by anyone (misidentified or not) re-engage and continue breaking contact. Just my 2 cents, but hey on the ground I might change my mind, wouldn't be the first time.
Also thought about carrying a micro-stuffable (think backpack covers) jacket with plain ol "SECURITY" in yellow on it, maybe it'll keep the other good guys from shooting me if I did start maneuvering. And I can explain to the cops why I was pretending after it's all over. Either way, Always good to keep thinking on this kind of stuff
