Turkey hunting is pretty poor these days. So, for the turkey addicts, I suggest posting how good it can be to help get psyched up.

Really good turkey killing conditions may result in a kill 1/3 of the time. That's really good; killing one every three hunts. The best I've ever had was killing one for three hunts in a row. One year, I killed one in FL, then didn't hunt again until I went to SC for opening week. I killed one each of the first two days. Three hunts, three gobblers.

The other time I killed three in three hunts was on some barely hunted private in GA. I killed two back to back opening week. Then I took a break so my season wouldn't end right off. I went back some weeks later and called up another two.

That's as good as it's been for me. I know there are people who travel the country and kill a truckload every year. Let's hear it!

The first hunt I ever went on was when I was 10 years old and it was sure enough a turkey hunt. I wound up bagging a nice mature gobbler that day. Beginner's luck I suppose. I killed a jake about two years after that and haven't connected since. I have come very close, but always wound up doing something I shouldn't have.

This year I have gotten myself super hyped up to try my hand at turkey hunting again. I have been practicing my calls, experimenting with ammunition and chokes, and started scouting this previous week. I narrowed down one ~ 200 acre portion of the 10,000 acre WMA I plan

on hunting and marked some locations that looked promising based on my research. I went out there last weekend and sure enough there were tons turkey tracks and scratching everywhere, fresh since our last rain about 2 weeks ago.

It's promising to me now that I have taken a more scientific approach to the endeavor that the birds are definitely hanging out where I thought they may be. I plan on doing more scouting every week up until the opener. I will go before dawn and just listen to see if I can hear one gobble. That will be the final indicator of their precise location to me. Here's to a productive season this year.
