Asked to return pistol purchase

Update, Sorry fellas, Just got in after a long day. I drove over to the guys shop at 10:30 this morning and the place was closed. I have the guys number but got no answer. I left a message while i was sitting in front of the shop and said that my time was limited and I may try to come back later in the week. About an hour later (I missed the call) I got a message from the shop owner apologizing saying that he was at the bank. He went on to say something about the kid still wanting the Ruger back and he inadvertently let something slip. Another piece of the puzzle if you will. He mentioned that the firearm belonged to the kids grandfather. The whole story gets stranger and stranger. Well he went on to tell me that he had some very nice firearms to trade me. Ie. with a touch of panic in his voice. Rugers Berettas ETC ETC. honestly, at this point I'm pretty disgusted. I will call the guy tomorrow but really may not be able to resolve anything until next week. I would like to thank all the members of the ODT community for the tremendous amount of knowledge, help and a littl bit of humor thrown in for good measure. I will continue to give updates as they become available. P.S. I went to the range an shot the snot out of it. Not going to clean it again if ever.

I think you have gone above and beyond on this one, but I would trade it or sell it back in your favor. Despite what some of these internet lawyers have posted in this thread, there is nothing whatsoever that could happen to you in this case. BUT if the kid decides to report it stolen, you would at least lose the gun temporarily and possibly permanently depending on the outcome. I would just cut my losses at this point, and get something in your favor for all of your troubles.

Sounds like the kid "borrowed" grand dad's gun, broke it, took it in for repair hoping to cover up his mistake. Grand dad and parents probably recently put together 2+2 on the mystery of "where's that gun I used to have?"

The dealer has screwed up somewhere along the line if he's in jeopardy of losing his FFL. He's trying to straighten out his screw up before it comes back to haunt him in a big way. You can trade him for something else that you like or make him replace it for the same gun. Whatever you do, be sure you at least get something of equivalent value. If I believed I in karma, that's about as far as I would go. I'd help him out, as long as I wasn't shorted in the process and I was satisfied with the outcome.

Trade it back for something you want and avoid business with him in the future. The only reason I would trade it is it was the granddads and I would feel better about it.

This... Honestly it sounds like the dealer did some shady business and now could possibly be in trouble.

I would do one of the 3 things...

1. Hold the gun for ransom for a AR (Seriously not a good idea)

2. Call ATF myself at risk of loosing the gun and getting to the bottom. If nothing else, you loose a gun and put a dishonest, theif in jail.

3. Keep the gun and tell the dealer you sold it a while ago, F him.. it is your gun anyway. But if AFT knocks I wouldn't let them in, but gladly hand over the firearm with a receipt of some sort.

I would do 3 myself but there are more options...

O and to those saying 20 or under can't buy a handgun.. Yes, Yes they can actually just not from an FFL.

Which sounds like what happened, Kid dropped gun off, came back to get it and the FFL couldn't legally give it back. Parents wouldnt come get it so the FFL had abgun in limbo until he desided to sell to you... andbforgot to cross all his eyes and dot his T's....

I'm 20 and have dropped a handgun off at an FFL to have some work done and was able to pick it up no problem.

Ya'll really believe it belonged to Pa? The guy is a liar and a cheat. Do what you want, but if he got it back from me it would cost him a pretty penny. Now if Pa and the kid wanted to meet me somewhere and verify the story, I might not want as much for the pistol.

I don't see how the paperwork would go thru if he never filed the paperwork for an abandoned gun? It sounds fishy to me.

I'd keep it and if he pushed the issue let him know you will contact the BATFE. They don't like things like this. You have done nothing wrong. You exchanged money and have a receipt. You control this situation.

People make mistakes.... This FFL could have thought he was doing the right thing and made a simple mistake. I wouldn't knock the guy if he is trying to work out something in your favor. He may just be panicking and not really sure how to handle it. I wouldn't go to the kid and the grandfather bc they will not want to give you the money back that you spent on it... It wasn't their problem. The FFL would be more likely to work out a great deal with you and you get something better and newer (while he saves his own a$$). It will prob work out for the best and you won't feel like a douchbag holding the gun back.

Me being the nice guy I am. I would do anything to help someone out. All this "keep it F'em" talk is just people being complete a-holes about it. That would never be in my nature.
