Avoiding suspicious deals...

how old does someone here have to be to buy a pistol with a ga dl?

I believe Ga law states that 18 is the legal limit, but there are some people that wont deal with you unless your 21+. My theory is, if they're in the military or LE, 18 is acceptable, if not its hard for me to sell to them unless they are 21 or above.

I am also a newer member, have a PA plate, PA number, but have a GA license, and plan on having my concealed carry in the near future. I know the number probably throws people off, and when I meet up im usually asked why my plate is PA, but like you said, its more of a hassle to change registration and numbers than its worth. Honestly, this site, and buying firearms in general, is the only reason that I got the GA license, which was an extremely simple process. I cant really deem any of the new comers with low post counts as shady until I speak with them. One phone call can tell you alot about a person and the firearms they are selling. If I see any ads saying "huned dolla hi point" or "cant buy a gun in stores" they are automatically getting ignored. As many of you mentioned, its just not worth it to get in trouble over selling one gun. Ask for proof of residency and if they can show it, and sound like a normal, law abiding individual, I will deal with them regardless of their time on the site. Alot of these guys just arent used to being on a forum, and at first, it can be confusing. Thanks again everyone for being so welcoming on this site, great group of people here.

You do realize you only have 30 days from the time you claim residency to get a GA tag? I found out first hand that it will cost you more than inconvenience if you get caught/stopped by the police. The hassle of going to court is more than getting a GA tag. I had an out of state tag and a GA license, it cost me a bunch of $$$ to get the tag and pay the fine.

Wow, I had no Idea that was the case. In my car, with my father driving, we got pulled over the other day for speeding.Got the ticket for speeding, but the officer never mentioned anything about the tag. Ill have to look into this some more very soon as it has been about 4 months since I moved down. Thanks for the heads up man!

And did I mention the abundant knowledge here?! You are correct, and I need to get it changed ASAP. Thank you for giving me the heads up, I guess I can just consider myself lucky that the officer didnt make mention of it.

I don't think we need to be in a panic over this. Yes, you should ask if the person is able to legally own a firearm and ask if they are a GA resident. Perhaps ask to see a GA driver's license but that's not necessary. If there is an ATF sting or even a gun control reporter looking for wrong doing, they'll be looking for someone really breaking the law. In the "sting" videos and reports that I've seen, the sales were blatantly illegal. The agent would confess that they're glad they don't have to sign anything because they're a felon, or they would state that they are from another state. Maybe they aren't all so obvious but just asking those two questions would seem to cover any transaction.

Be smart but don't let fear make you volunteer to do what gun control advocates would love to mandate.

All you have to do is start a rumor and soon enough it will become fact.
It's unreal the number of people on this site who are gun control advocates. They are easy to spot.

If people continue putting more restrictions on the personal firearms transactions than the law requires, it will soon become law and you will have to register each and every firearm, in the name of keeping the guns out of criminals hands. The next move will be when "Big Brother" comes a knocking and takes your guns away.
Paranoia will destroy ya.

If you sell a car for cash do you check their drivers licence and check their driving record? I think not.
If you stop at a licence check. Do you pop the hood, trunk, all the doors and spread eagle across the hood, so the po po can have a look around?

Who's to say the man selling watermelons beside the road didn't steal them? "Better check they might be hot"

I have a GWL and a GA DL, but I never check someone's credentials when making a transaction. The present law does not require this.

The law states that it is illegal to "knowingly" sell to some that is a convicted felon or a out of state resident.

It would be nice to have another category for the "paranoid buyers and sellers", so I wouldn't have to filter through the paranoid.
Paranoid people give me that not so easy feeling. If a seller or a buyer wants more than my word, that's enough for me to turn down the deal.

I'm sorry...but if a newbie comes here sees all the for sale/trade ads and best he can do is: 9mm pistol 300

I don't care to business with him anyway.

If the seller's intelligence level rivals that of a bowl of soup, I'll move along; whether he's a newbie or not.

My hero post of the day! Preach on, brother!

I'm in this boat a lot being a military person assigned to GA. Since in my home state of MI I had to pay a around 500 for my initial permit (200 for a training class, 200 for permit 100 for pics&finger prints) switching to a GA ID would void that. Besides GA and MI have resiprosity so its pointless, not to mention I have a DC cell phone #. So, I always make a point to tell people up front, hey Im in the military stationed here do not have a GA ID but will gladly show you my Mil ID, DL and a copy of my orders. Most of the people on here appreciate it and are cool with it, I've even shown the code stating that's all that's required of me. Some still are suspect and would rather not, but hey, that is their right all have been polite about it too. But that's because the caliber of people on here are good people and in my experiences have been legit...

My buddy back in VA tells me stories about some of his dealings with people on the VA trader and its night and day for ODT.

as long as they can show me "proof of residency", I'm good with it. I wasn't trying to single the military out at all. Like I said, I'm a veteran and would give a VET or active duty a better deal, they just have to show proof of residency. If they can't produce that, then it ain't gonna happen.
I think the last one that I tried to deal with was actually stationed in Beaufort SC trying to say he was stationed at Hunter in Savannah. Honesty and being upfront goes along way with me.

Also, I'm just not personally comfortable selling say an AR or AK (which I no longer own) to an 18 or 19 year old, civilian or military, Just my preference, no offense towards anybody intended.
