In the past it was an omage to an existing superstar (Michael Jackson, Prince, Paul McCartney, Beyonce), or a career-boost for a mid-level / up-and-coming star. Either way, it's now the stuff of E! TV, tabloids, and various opinion circles that I care nothing about.

There are more important things to worry about, e.g., Super Bowl commercials. :)
