Baiting Game

You guys don't get me wrong here. Just because I don't approve doesn't mean I don't think it isn't a necessary evil sonetimes. The hunting population is not what it used to be and the populations are exploding in the real rural areas because the main predators are almost gone on most of the east cost. It's not real hunting but it probably does some good for all the bad it does. This may be a contradiction but the heards need thinning every know and then to promote bigger and healthier animals..

I agree, it is not real hunting or sportsmanlike. It is harvesting meat and helping the herd. I have no problem with that because I am all about the meat and not a trophy. The doe is much better meat in my opinion. Especially once the rut has begun. Rutting buck is almost as nasty as an old boar hog.

I never hunted deer over bait on private land, even when they made it legal. I now hunt only public land. I have killed four bucks on WMAs this season. No bait, no cameras, no food plot, no scents, no shooting house. I`m glad baiting is illegal on public land. I wish they would outlaw cameras on WMAs. Some guys think a camera "holds a spot" the whole season. Not so. I`m thankful we have public land to hunt on.

Why not? No laws violated. The four deer taken were on bonus hunts. DNR gives you two free tags on bonus hunts. The point I am making is that you don`t have to have bait or other modern stuff to be a successful deer hunter. If I wrote something offensive, enlighten me, please.

Nope. Nothing offensive. I was unaware of the bonus hunt thing. I have never hunted public land in Ga. I do however think you missed my point completely. It is not about being a successful deer hunter. The DNR with their biologists have decided that we need to kill a lot of does in order to thin the heard to a size that is healthy and sustainable. That is the entire reason for hunting over bait. Plain and simple. Killing bucks does nothing to help the overpopulation problem.

I don`t like to kill does. I`ve not killed a doe in several years. I don`t hunt over bait because I don`t consider it fair chase. I`m not about controlling the population of deer. The insurance lobby has a lot to do with that. That lobby was behind the killing of does. Who needs ten doe tags? Many areas have drastically decreased the herd to the point that the low fawn retention rate and the over-harvest of does has decreased the deer population to a point where the herd may never recover. Yet we still have ten doe tags. Where do I get this information? From the DNR biologists.
